The sentencing has been met with criticism. According to Daily Mail, the victim's widow, Carol, told reporters she was 'not happy' with the judgement.
According to the publication, Charles' lawyers said he acted out of character and might have had a medical problem that made him not 'fully aware of what he was doing'.
The hit-and-run took place in New York in the month of February. At the time, Nicki's father was walking on a road in Mineola, Long Island at 6:15 pm when Charles hit him.
He reportedly got out of his car and looked at Maraj on the ground, but then drove off without calling 911.
According to police, he not only fled the scene, but attempted to hide his car in his garage and cover it with a tarp.
Nicki's dad was then taken to the hospital in critical condition and died the following day .
Charles pleaded guilty to leaving a scene of an accident and tampering with physical evidence, and expressed his remorse.
His lawyers told the courts that he feels tremendous empathy for the Maraj family and tremendous remorse for any role he played in his death.
