Local dramas to warm up local streaming entertainment on Freedom Day
As we commemorate 28 years since our first democratic
elections, Freedom Day is also the ideal time to enjoy the growth in the local movie
industry with a number of internationally recognised dramas, documentaries and
movies shot on home soil.
South Africans are spoilt with a string of world class dramas and documentaries available on streaming platform, Showmax, to celebrate Freedom Day.

Award winning series, “The Republic”, is back with a second season that has ruled social media since the first episode. It’s has proven to be a hit and considered as one of the best political drama series in South Africa. This season looks at a South Africa under the presidency of its first ever female leader. If you have not watched Season 1, it is also available to binge on Showmax.
For fans of documentaries, there is the amazing true story of a 20-year old from Morocco who took on the journey of almost four years to get to Cape Town. “Africa and I” tells the story of how this young man walked, hitchhiked, cycled and even used a skateboard to complete the more then 30 000 kilometres across 24 countries. Through the lens of his pocket camera we see Africa, her people, the beautiful landscapes and some frightening realities.
The biggest series ever filmed in Cape Town is back for a second season. “Raised by Wolves” is once again lauded by critics as one of the most exciting sci-fi shows in years. Fans of cinematography are also in awe of the scenes shot around Cape Town and the magic of the Mother City’s succulents on the big screen.
Last but by far not least – the story about a pandemic, shot during the pandemic. “Glasshouse” is set after an airborne virus hit mankind, confining a family to their airtight glasshouse. It was filmed at the Pearson Conservatory at St George’s Park in the Eastern Cape and for the cast it was a case of art imitating life since they were in lockdown at the location due to the Covid-19.
