The 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom' star admits he struggles with the fear of failing but gets through it by learning not to "respect" those feelings.
He said: "Fear is an interesting one for me. I think it's definitely part of what goes on inside my head. I battle it.
"I don't respect fear. I don't mean that in an arrogant way, but I am self-aware, and that's how I deal with it."
The 43-year-old actor also revealed he has felt more "responsible" since being given more leading roles in films but admits he misses being a part of an ensemble.
He added to hungertv.com: "With growth comes a lot of responsibility. I think one of the tougher things when you go from being a supporting actor to a leading actor is that your process is slightly different.
"You find yourself on your own quite a bit, and when you're used to an ensemble, that can be a little unsettling. But you're given a lot more freedom to create in that space, and that's a gift for any actor. That freedom is why I love what I do."
