Funding opportunities for Musicians
Updated | By Shotgun Tori
We all know how badly affected musicians have been by the COVID-19 pandemic. In a bid to combat the challenges facing musicians, Andre Le Roux (IKS Cultural Consulting) talks about unlocking a nighttime economy and best practices when applying for funding.
It’s not just about the money, it’s about a sense of self-worth.- Andre Le Roux
Why do we even make music? What are the sacrifices we make to be able to do it? Is it even worth it? With the COVID-19 pandemic bringing the challenges of the artist sharply into focus, and determined to find some kind of meaning in it all, I began to interview my musician friends.
That pool has subsequently widened, and now includes interviews with industry experts as well as independent artists who are making it work against all odds.
I’m Shotgun Tori (an indie/folk singer-songwriter from Johannesburg), and this is the Shotgun Story podcast. It’s an inspiring resource for anyone who loves music and who has ever thought about making it.
In this week’s episode, we speak to Andre Le Roux about funding opportunities for musicians.
Managing Director of IKS

Market Theatre Foundation and the Audit and Risk Committee of Music in Africa,
as well as the Southern African Focal Point for the African Culture Fund, he is

Also in this episode: what's been lost in the sector over the last two years,
the Concerts SA Digital Mobility Fund (and best practices!), how the act of
applying for funding can get “some people out of that dark place of being
alone”, sharing information with other artists, unlocking the nighttime economy
in our cities, and the importance of visionary leadership.
