Christina Aguilera is known as a trailblazer.

But for her, questioning the status quo has not always been simple.

In the early years of her career, she dealt with double standards.

One particular incident where she had to confront unfair treatment was when she was on tour with Justin Timberlake in 2003.

“There was a lot of double standards with it,” she told Alex Cooper on the 'Call Her Daddy' podcast.

She says there were things Justin was allowed to do that she wasn't.

“Because I went on tour with Justin, we did the Stripped [&] Justified tour, and there were things where I was just like, ‘Why is it okay for him and not okay for me', you know what I mean?," she said.

“I was constantly pushing back in my way,” the 'Lady Marmalade' singer said.

She spoke about how she had to change the music in order to be true to herself.

“I was like, I have to do songs that mean something to me and are valid to who I am and being fearless and talking about anything,” the singer said.

She began singing openly about sexuality.

“And that includes sexuality! I felt that there was a lot of shame and fear around the subject… so I just wanted to be who I was and make a safe space for everyone to feel good — and make it a conversation," she said.

The 42-year-old has come far in her music career. Today she is a five-time Grammy winner and in 2022, she was honoured at Billboard Latin Music Awards for her humanitarian work.
