Does your mattress need a change? Here are three signs

Sleeping on a mattress that does not offer adequate support to
your body can cause health complications. Here are three signs you might be
ignoring that indicate you need a new bed.
A bed is one of the most important items in your bedroom.
According to bed expert Pam Naidoo of Dial A Bed, there are signs people can look out for that can indicate that a bed is worn out and needs to be changed.
Research has shown that sleeping on a worn-out bed for a long period of time can cause health complications.
Below, Naidoo gives three signs that indicate it is time for a new bed.

Back pain
“If you’re waking up with aches and sore muscles, your mattress might be to blame,” says Naidoo.
She says this could be caused by your mattress “applying pressure in the wrong places or letting your body sink into an uncomfortable position”.
Causing damage to your back can have dire repercussions.
So, to avoid causing more damage, it is better to establish if your mattress is really the cause of your backaches and if yes, change it.
Naidoo says a good mattress is supposed to contour to your body while still providing adequate support.
Mattress deterioration
Whilst most beds come with a warranty of ten to fifteen years, Naidoo says a bed should be changed at least every five to ten years.
“A good mattress is like a car or a favourite t-shirt, the more you use it—every night! —the more it wears down. Due to this, it’s recommended that you replace your mattress every 5-10 years.”
Naidoo says there are three signs that can show you that your mattress is deteriorating.
“A good rule of thumb is to get a new one if you notice parts of the mattress sagging, if your partner’s sleep is disturbed when you move around, or if you wake up feeling stiff or with pains,” she says.
You weigh more than the recommended weight
It is important to check how many kilograms your bed can handle. If you are heavier than the bed can handle, then it is advisable to get a new bed.
“Finally, if you are moving into a bigger bedroom, you might find it a great excuse to upgrade to a bigger mattress,” says Naidoo.
“Choosing the right mattress size is a bit of an art. You have to consider the size of your bedroom, whether you will share the bed with a partner or pet, and finally strike a balance to find your ideal sleeping to living space ratio,” she concludes.
