Heritage Day Recipe: Sascha van Gelder's boerewors stew

Boerewors is one of the most-loved foods in South Africa. Give it a little twist this Heritage Day with this lekker recipe from Sascha van Gelder.

Farmer’s sausage, aka boerewors, is a hit in many homes.

Whether grilled, braai'd, cooked or made into a stew, boerewors never disappoints. 

This popular sausage contains mostly beef, which is sometimes combined with pork, lamb, or both.

Sascha van Gelder has shared her recipe, which is delicious and quick to make. 

"I love a great South African boerewors and was looking for a way to enjoy it in winter as we were not braaing as much. I found this recipe and tweaked it a little and it is now one of my family's favourites," says Sascha van Gelder. 

Below is the recipe. It serves four and can be enjoyed with mashed potatoes.

Ingredients: 

1 onion, finely chopped 

1tbsp canola oil, for frying 

1 tsp cumin 

3 tsp smoked paprika 

1 Tbsp turmeric, ground 

350g boerewors ( recommend beef, but can use whatever you like) 

3 cloves garlic, chopped 

1 tsp dried chilli flakes(optional) 

2 tsp dried oregano 

1 Tbsp organic tomato paste 

1 x 400 g tin organic Italian chopped tomatoes 

750ml to 1 L beef stock 

Cooking Instructions: 

- Slice the onion and fry in hot canola oil with the cumin, smoked paprika and turmeric. 

- Cut the boerewors into bite-sized pieces and brown with the onions. 

- Add the garlic, chilli flakes, oregano, tomato paste, chopped tomatoes and beef stock ( add as much beef stock as you prefer, sometimes the tomatoes can be watery). 

- Simmer for 15 minutes and season.
