Celebrate TV Dinner Day the way you are supposed to
Updated | By ThriveIn
It’s TV Dinner Day - a day dedicated to celebrating pre-packed frozen meals.
Today is one of those days where you have an excuse to ignore the stove and head to your local supermarket's frozen food aisle.
There’s nothing as annoying as coming home from work feeling tired and still having to spend hours preparing dinner.
Not only is it time-consuming, but it can be very exhausting. Thankfully, there are pre-packed dinners that can be bought in stores to make your life easier.
But do you know where the original idea of pre-packaged frozen dinners comes from?
In 1953, C.A. Swanson & Sons came up with the first ever frozen dinner meal which was sold in stores. It consisted of turkey, cornbread dressing, peas, and sweet potatoes. All people needed to do was put the pre-packed food in the oven for 25 minutes, and then enjoy a hot dinner in front of the television - hence the name, 'TV Dinner'.
Not surprisingly, this form of dinner became very popular. According to reports, the original product sold for 98 cents in the USA. The production estimate for the first year was 5,000 dinners, but it far exceeded that amount. Over 10-million packages were sold.
Today, most supermarkets sell pre-packed foods and most frozen food trays are now made of a microwaveable material, making it even more convenient for those who don't have ovens.
So, to celebrate TV Dinner Day with the rest of the world, why not visit your favourite supermarket and pick up a pre-packaged dinner. Don’t forget to eat while watching TV!
