Are you suffering from caffeine intoxication?

Here are signs and withdrawal symptoms that might indicate you are consuming too much caffeine.
Coffee is one of the most loved beverages in the world.
According to Coffee Rank, 30-40% of the world's population consumes coffee every day.
Statista reports that in the past two years, there has been an increase in coffee consumption around the world.
"In 2020/2021, around 166.63 million 60 kilogram bags of coffee were consumed worldwide, a slight increase from 164 million bags in the previous year," states the report.

Coffee contains caffeine and drinking too much caffeine can be dangerous. This is because caffeine is a drug that stimulates your brain and nervous system. According to National Library of Medicine, caffeine is the most consumed psychoactive drug in the world. So, any drink that contains caffeine should be consumed in moderation.
Health experts says adults should not drink more than 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine per day (approximately the amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee). Teens should limit their caffeine intake to less than 100 mg per day.
Dr. Holly Phillips, a medical contributor to CBS News, says there has been an increase of people suffering from caffeine intoxication.
According to CBS News, the following are symptoms of caffeine intoxication:
- Restlessness
- Nervousness
- Excitement
- Insomnia
- Flushed face
- Diuresis
- Stomach ups
- Muscle Twitching
- Cluttered thoughts
- A fluttering heart
- Manic behaviour
- Psychomotor agitation
- Anxiety
- Seeing things and hearing things that are not there.

It also listed the following withdrawal symptoms:
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Drowsiness
- Depressed mood or irritability
- Difficulty concentrating
- Flu-like symptoms
- Muscle aches
- Nausea
If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, speak to your dietitian or doctor on the best alternatives to caffeine.
