SA celebrity moms who support public breastfeeding
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
“Anyone
offended by breastfeeding is staring too hard.”
It’s hard to believe, but in 2017 many people are still disgusted by public breastfeeding.
Why is it okay for women’s beasts to be sexualised in the media, but when they are used to do what they were naturally intended for, everyone freaks out?
Well, moms have had enough!
A group of Johannesburg moms staged a protest at a Clearwater Mall restaurant earlier this month after a breastfeeding mother was humiliated by a manager.
The restaurant manager told her she was making other diners uncomfortable.
She is one of many women around the world who have been publicly outed for using their breasts for their intended purpose – breastfeeding their babies.
But mothers are taking a stand against the discrimination by speaking up and uniting to ensure breastfeeding moms’ rights are not ignored.
Normalise Breastfeeding South Africa are holding talks with health officials to ensure nursing moms are treated fairly at restaurants and shops. They hope a bill will be passed to protect the women, and fine those who discriminate against them.
Celebrity moms are also adding their voices to
the public breastfeeding movement to create more awareness and inspire other
moms.

Jo-Ann Strauss
TV personality and businesswoman Jo-Ann Strauss is a proud advocate of public breastfeeding. The mom of two breastfeeds her daughter in restaurants, and couldn’t be bothered by what people think. “Why does feeding my baby in the most natural (and best) way for him/ her offend you?” she asked in blog post.
Candice Swanepoel
New mom Candice Swanepoel made her views on public breastfeeding very clear in an Instagram blog post. "Many women today are shamed for breastfeeding in public, or even kicked out of public places for feeding their children. I have been made to feel the need to cover up and somewhat shy to feed my baby in public places but strangely feel nothing for the topless editorials I've done in the name of art?"
