Reduce your plastic footprint this World Environment Day

As we celebrate World Environment Day, why not do that little extra to make the world a better place.

World Environment Day is an extremely important day to create awareness on how to protect your environment. The initiative started in 1974 and has grown into a worldwide outreach programme supported by organisations such as the UN. 

Each year World Environment Day is themed to focuses on a particularly pressing environmental concern and this year the theme is beating plastic pollution.

We have put together a few easy ways that you can help this World Environment Day.

Recycle, Recycle, Recycle

One of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce your carbon footprint it to recycle. All you need to do is separate your plastics, paper, glass, cans and food waste. Then take it to your nearest recycling centre. For more information click here.

Buy Recycled Products

If you can't reuse it, don't buy it. Try and buy environmentally friendly plastic, glass and cans. This will ensure that you are reducing the number of new products that are in circulation.

Don't use straws

Studies predict that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by weight. When you order something to drink at a restaurant rather say no to the straw.

Say no to plastic cutlery

Next time you order takeaways say no to the plastic cutlery. Rather keep a set of cutlery in your office drawer that you reuse every day.

Slow down on the gum

According to the World Wildlife Foundation, Britons are the second biggest consumers of gum in the world, chewing an estimated 130 sticks per person each year. Chewing gum which is made from plastic itself should be swapped for plastic-free alternatives,

In this case the less glitter the better

Glitter is made from small pieces of plastic and once in the ocean it could be ingested by smaller marine creature and enter the oceans eco-system. However, you don't have to let this dull your shine, you can still purchase biodegradable glitter.
