Matric Results 2022: Coping with disappointment
If you are one of those learners who has to re-do matric or you are not satisfied with your results, find ways to improve here.
On 19 January 2023, Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga announced the National Senior Certificate results with an overall pass rate of 80.1 percent.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has congratulated those who passed and shared advice for those who received disappointing results.
The president said learners need to know that failing matric does not signal the end of their learning path.

“For the relatively small proportion of unsuccessful candidates, this is not the end of the road," said Ramaphosa.
The president added that the scholars need to look at the available options for improving matric results.
"You can pick yourself up and take advantage of a number of options that will empower you to continue your journey to success,” he said.
These options include:
- Remarking or re-checking examination answer scripts.
- Writing supplementary examinations.
- Re-enrolling at a school if you are under 21 years of age.
- Those who are above 21 can register as part-time candidates or enrol at Adult Education Centres or register at further Education and Training Colleges.

One thing that will help in this new academic year is to look at what contributed to not achieving the results you were hoping for.
“The first step moving forward is to reflect on why one failed. Some circumstances are out of our control, such as a loss of a loved one or the absence of a teacher,” says Stacey Cohen, an Educational Psychologist in Sandton, Gauteng, in an interview.
“However, if a matriculant can come to the conclusion that they struggled or felt overwhelmed, they can seek extra lessons at school or counselling so as to better equip them should they decide to repeat the year. In addition to this, if one did not study, perhaps one can work out a better study timetable to ensure they allot sufficient time to study, grasp concepts as well as allow for opportunity to consult with a teacher should there be a concept one is struggling with," said the Educational Psychologist.
