Here are ways you can improve your matric results
Updated | By Poelano Malema
Failing matric or getting poor grades doesn't have to be the end of your school journey. Here is how you can improve your marks and get an opportunity to study the course you love.
Over 790,000 matriculants wrote their examination in South Africa in 2019.
The results were released on Tuesday.
While many celebrated their pass and good results, not all matriculants managed to get over the line.
The country achieved a pass rate of 81.3%.
This means close to twenty per cent of 2019's matric pupils did not make it, and although some passed, their marks might still not allow them to study the course they desire.
If you want to upgrade your subjects in order to be able to study your desired course, the Department of Basic Education's Second Chance Matric Support Programme is aimed at helping you.
It offers pupils who need to re-write or upgrade their subjects an opportunity to do so.
In order to qualify:
- You must be a candidate that has not met the minimum requirements in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or matric examinations, and only require a maximum of two subjects to obtain the Senior Certificate.
- You must write the same two subjects taken in the previous year.
- For those who did not write due to the death of a family member or medical conditions, you must provide documentary evidence of why you were not able to write in November.
- To write the supplementary examination, you must register before the cut-off date on 31 January.
The Second Chance Matric Support Programme has several ways in which it offers support to those who want to improve their marks. These are:
- Free face-to-face classes which are available in different schools in the country. You can enquire from your school to find out if it is not one of them.
- Multimedia broadcasting solutions such as SABC Educational shows on Youtube and Geleza Nathi which is broadcast weekdays on SABC 1 from 5am to 6am with repeats at 11pm.
- Online course support is available throughout the year, as well as printed resources.
