This Tuesday, South Africans will be celebrating their diverse cultures and heritage. One of the popular cultures in South Africa is the Afrikaner one.

According to South African History, the Afrikaners are descended mainly from Western Europeans who settled on the southern tip of Africa during the middle of the 17th century. They make up 61 per cent of THE white population in South Africa, reports thoughtco.com.
Voortrekker Monument
The Voortrekker Monument is an Afrikaans heritage site that recently celebrated 80 years of existence. It commemorates the Pioneer history of Southern Africa and the history of the Afrikaner.
The site was designed by architect Gerard Moerdijk and inaugurated in 1949. It has three grounds which are rich in history.
Among some of the great things you will get to experience on the site are - the Hall of Heroes, which houses the biggest marble frieze in the world and the statues of three historical leaders - Piet Retief, Andries Pretorius, and Hendrik Potgieter.
The site is open on Heritage Day for anyone wanting to learn more about the Afrikaaner culture. The entrance fee is R90 per adult, R45 for children under 18 and there is a discounted family fee of R180.
