‘Worst is still to come’, warns Makhura as Soweto sees Covid-19 surge
Gauteng Premier David Makhura has warned that the province is not out of the woods as the country’s economic hub continues to rack up Covid-19 infections
Johannesburg remains the epicenter of the Covid-19 outbreak in the province with over 70 000 cases.
Makhura briefed the media on the province's fight against the pandemic on Friday.
As of Friday, the number of confirmed cases in Gauteng stood at 187 631 with 2 388 deaths and 132 002 recoveries.
The majority of the confirmed cases are in Soweto at 17 382.
"The surge is easing but we don't want to say we have passed the peak, this may have been the first wave of the peak. We are still working on the basis that the worst is still to come,” Makhura said.

"We are now going to direct our interventions in Soweto, including law enforcement, ensuring there are gatherings and parties and also to mobalise communities to come to the party on social measures. We will also be educating the community on the hotspots in the area so they can protect themselves.”
He said they will also be focusing on the Pretoria CBD and Atteridgeville, Laudium and surrounding areas which has 12 038 confirmed Covid-19 cases.
