President Cyril Ramaphosa says he is concerned about the rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in Gauteng.
To date, the province has 49 937 positive cases and counting.
For the first time on Thursday, South Africa's economic hub also recorded the highest coronavirus deaths in the country in one day.
Ramaphosa visited Mpumalanga on Friday to assess the province's management of the pandemic.
"Mpumalanga is still much better placed than other provinces such as the Western Cape, Gauteng, Eastern Cape, and KZN. I am not saying you should count your luck, because we are still amid the rising peak of infections.

"We are concerned about the increased infections in other parts of the country, especially Gauteng which is rising exponentially which could soon overtake the Western Cape, that is a matter of great concern for us," he said.
Ramaphosa also lauded the work done in Mpumalanga to manage the pandemic.
