Nxesi: Domestic workers, gardeners must be provided with protective equipment
Labour and Employment Minister Thulas Nxesi Minister says domestic workers and gardeners must, like all other employees, be provided by personal protective equipment.
Nxesi made the remarks at a media briefing media by the economic cluster of ministers in Pretoria on Friday.
The ministers provided more information on the level 3 regulations.
The country is set to move down to lockdown level 3 on Monday, a move which will some 8 million South Africans return to work amid the rise in Covid-19 infections and deaths.
Level three will see the return to work of domestic workers and gardeners.
“Every employer has the responsibility to provide protective clothing for their employees including the employer of the domestic workers. This includes issues of sanitisers and masks,” said Nxesi.
Nxesi emphasised that employees have the right to refuse to work if the necessary protective gear is not supplied by their places of employment.
