Lockdown implementation ‘problematic’, says Nelson Mandela Foundation
The Nelson Mandela Foundation has labelled as inconsistent the implementation of the Covid-19 lockdown regulations.
The High Court in Pretoria this week declared level 4 and 3 of the lockdown regulations unconstitutional and invalid.
However, the regulations will remain in place for the next 14 days while government is given an opportunity to remedy the situation.
CEO Sello Hatang told Jacaranda FM News on Thursday that the foundation believes the government should have done more to ensure the regulations are reasonable.
"The practical application of the lockdown regulations has been problematic in its inconsistency, in some instances it has been petty.”
Hatang said his colleagues, who were travelling to Mpumalanga during level 4, were forced to turn back to Johannesburg to get new permits.
"I had traveled there earlier on and I was allowed to go through. In what world do you have regulations that are applied inconsistently? And another instance, I was going to a shop where I was told a kettle was not an essential service, another shop allowed me to purchase one.”
He added that regulations should focus on controlling the amount of people in public spaces instead of the what they want to purchase.
