Gauteng mine closed as 164 mine workers test positive for Covid-19

The province had registered 2773 positive cases in total by Monday with 1899 recoveries and 29 deaths.

A total of 103 people were receiving treatment at both public and private healthcare facilities.

The provincial Health Department's Kwara Kekana says the health team met with mine management on Sunday afternoon to receive a report from the mine and to ensure that there is a swift response in the management of these cases.

"The outbreak team was dispatched to trace all known contacts and the process of contact tracing is ongoing," says Kekana.

“This would be accompanied by an intensified screening and testing campaign in the area."

Kekana adds that the Department has made available three quarantine isolation facilities in the province

There are located at the Nasrec Expo centre grounds, Transnet’s Esselen Park premises, and at Eskom and would accommodate some of the positive cases, according to Kekana.

Underground production in the affected mine remains closed until further notice.
