Gauteng legislature gears up for digital meetings
The Gauteng legislature will resume its work in the coming weeks.
The legislature has been on recess since the implementation of the national lockdown implemented to curb the spread of coronavirus.
Speaker Ntombi Mekgwe says the House will have to do its work online as the social distancing measures are expected to remain in place after the lockdown has been lifted.
In the coming weeks, the legislature will launch various digital platforms to enable it to do oversight.
"The platforms will ensure maximum public participation and oversight, which are critical to legislature mandates,” says Mekgwe.
“The Gauteng provincial legislature has previously relied on the conventional methods which largely included physical communal venues.”
Mekgwe says members have been working from home since the start of the lockdown.
"Since the announcement of the lockdown by the president, GPL members and staff have been working from home and to date, significant progress has been achieved in preparation for the end of the year reporting and audit preparations.”
