Gauteng could be set for ‘localised lockdowns’ – Makhura
The provincial government in Gauteng could ask its national counterpart to reintroduce more stringent lockdown measures amid the surge of Covid-19 infections.
To date, the province has a total of 45 944 infections, with 12 957 recoveries and 244 deaths.
Speaking on Thursday, Premier David Makhura said his government will approach the coronavirus command council to reintroduce the previous lockdown restrictions to help curb the spread of the virus in the province.
He suggested that the lockdown measures will be localised - targeting hotspot areas.
"We think there may be a case for localised lockdown, harder lockdown being localised.
"In some of the areas where things are getting out of hand and people are not observing measures that have been put in place.:
Makhura expressed concern that Gauteng now has the largest numbers of active Covid-19 patients.
"The month of June has seen a speak in a number of confirmed cases, especially daily Covid cases in Gauteng province. As you would know we started level 3 during the month of June, but already towards the end May we were worried about 300 cases a day and now we have 3000 a day.”
The provincial government will hold a series of engagements this coming weekend to explore the reintroduction of some lockdown measures, which could include more stringent measures around the sale of alcohol.
