Decline in Covid-19 hospital admissions, says Gauteng Health

The country's economic hub, which is still the the epicentre of South Africa's pandemic, recorded 23 coronavirus-related deaths on Saturday.

Spokesperson for the provincial Health Department Kwara Kekana says the decline in admission is encouraging.

"The highest number of hospital admissions was recorded in the middle of July, with the highest recorded daily new admission over 320 as of 16 July. 

"Based on the detailed modelling in scenario planning, the current public sector beds will be adequate. The overall strategy is to increase internal bed capacity and to utilise private sector beds when needed."

Nationally more than 10,000 people have died from coronavirus in South Africa since the pandemic arrived in the country in March, the health ministry said Saturday.

South Africa has registered 553,188 infections, more than half of the continental caseload, and the fifth biggest number of Covid-19 cases  in the world.

While South Africa is the continent's hardest-hit nation in terms of infections, its mortality rate at around 1,8 percent, is one of the lowest among countries with high numbers of cases.
