Covid-19 tally nears 100 thousand, 53 more lives lost
The number of people who have lost their lives to the Covid-19 pandemic now stands at 1930 according to the Department of Health.
This comes after 53 people lost their lives since the last report by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.
In his daily statement, Mkhize says eight are from Gauteng, one from Kwa-Zulu Natal, 17 from Eastern Cape and 27 from Western Cape.
"We wish to express our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased. The mortality rate is 1,98%," says the minister.
The minister says 97 302 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed, meaning the number of new cases increased by 4 621.
"The number of recoveries is 51 608, which translates to a recovery rate of 53%," says Mkhize.
