Corruption Watch has welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement that the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) would be probing all Covid-19 corruption.
On Thursday, Ramaphosa announced that he has signed a proclamation to allow the unit to investigate all those responsible for corruption related to government’s work during the pandemic.
Corruption Watch’s Karam Singh says it’s no secret that the country has a problem with corruption.

“The country is facing a corruption challenge which can derail our efforts to address the pandemic and provide vital relief to those who need it.
“The signing of the new proclamation to activate the SIU to investigate Covid-related corruption is an important step in efforts by law enforcement to detect and prevent further abuses when it comes to public spending.”
Millions of rands have reportedly already been lost as a result of corrupt tenders and procurement since the start of the lockdown.
