Here’s why some people no longer wash their clothes
Updated | By Etienne Bruwer
How often do you wash your clothes? Or, more specifically, your jeans.
It is standard procedure in most households to wash clothes regularly, even after just wearing a piece of clothing once.
Most of us also assume that that’s standard procedure for everyone around us too, but you might be mistaken.

A new trend is making the round where people wash their clothes less or in some cases not at all!
The “No wash” movement
The “No wash” or “Low wash” movement is a movement in which people believe that clothes shouldn’t be washed as regularly as most people currently do.
The movement encourages people to refrain from regular washing to preserve the beauty and durability of clothes.

According to Hiut Denim Co, the longer you avoid washing your jeans, the more beautiful it becomes.
Sustainability and time-saving
Many sustainable fashion experts support this movement as they believe washing your jeans too regularly can take a toll on the durability of the garments.
Frequent washing can cause clothes to tear, shrink, and lose their colour, which ultimately impacts the environment.
Enthusiasts of the movement also argue that skipping a wash cycle can save a lot of time in many people’s already busy schedules.
There is even a competition…
The Indigo Invitational is a competition which involves wearing raw (newly bought) denim jeans for a year and judging the quality of fade patterns achieved.

Participants showcase their jeans, demonstrating that low-wash habits can lead to extraordinary results.
It has gained popularity, especially amongst sustainable fashion experts and denim enthusiasts.
