A mayor in the Philippines has made an announcement ordering all government workers to smile when serving the public.

During his announcement, the mayor also threatened disciplinary action against any local government official who fails to comply with the order.
The Mayor of Mulanay municipality in Quezon, Aristotle “Aris” L Aguirre, implemented the new policy to "tackle" the problem of low spirits among workers.
According to The Guardian, this is one of the mayor's flagship programmes and he wishes the new order will “give sincerity by showing a feeling of calmness and friendly atmosphere”.

Aguirre, during his announcement, made it clear that there should be "strict compliance" from all government workers as staff would be monitored.
