Government to potentially seize all plant-based meat products
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
The South African government could potentially seize all plant-based meat products due to growing pressure from the meat industry.
Friday on Breakfast with Martin Bester, the team discussed the controversy over plan-based meat products.
The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development has announced that it could potentially seize all plant-based meat alternatives that have "misleading labelling".
According to Money Web, the department wants all plant-based products using the words 'burger', 'nugget', 'sausage' or 'patties' to be taken off store shelves.

This comes after a massive outcry from consumers and the South African meat industry claiming that plant-based foods should not be labelled with "real" meat names and terms.
The plant-based food industry has called out the government, calling this move "irrational, illogical, and damaging to a fast-growing industry".
