Good Morning Angels: Helping an inspirational 18-year-old GBV survivor towards a bright future
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
This morning, Good Morning Angels and the Spar Women’s Virtual Challenge will assist an 18-year-old girl, who has survived so much.
BACKGROUND: Gender-Based Violence in South Africa has reached frightening levels during the lockdown. Even before lockdown, official police statistics show an average of 114 rapes alone were reported every day.
However, Stats SA found that only one in nine rapes are reported in South Africa. A more accurate reflection of the rape reality in the country, therefore, is that on average 1026 rapes are committed every day in South Africa - that's 42 every hour. Most abuse and violence against women and children are committed by people they know.
This morning, Good Morning Angels and the Spar Women’s Virtual Challenge will assist an 18-year old girl, who has survived this and more. Sanet Basson is in matric this year and studying hard to finish school. She does very well academically, with Maths as her strongest subject.
Sanet did not have an easy start in life. She was born to a mother who could not take care of her and as a baby was placed with foster parents. When she was 14, Sanet was removed by the state and placed in the care of the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home in Modimolle. The marketer at the home, Marlene de Villiers, describes her as a joy to the home and a young lady with a bright future. Because of her hard work and academic performance, she will be getting a bursary to study Marketing next year.
But, there is one thing that Sanet needs assistance with before she leaves the home after finishing matric. She needs to have a Branchial Cleft Cyst removed from her neck - and that’s why Marlene wrote to Good Morning Angels.
